Victory Lap At Bodentief Speedway

Late summer and early autumn marks the end of another great season of car culture in Europe. With still a chance to enjoy a comfortable temperature outdoors, it’s the time for finale events after summer’s peak heat before everybody’s well loved cars get stored over the cold months.

One of my final events this time of the year would be Bodentief Speedway that takes place at the Cologne-Weidenpesch Racecourse, a horse racing track that’s right on the outer edge of Cologne. It's an unconventional location, as is typical for events in Germany, but I always expect something truly cool from Bodentief.

The meadow next to the racecourse acts as the main stage, while the spectators' stage provides an unobstructed view of all the cars in attendance.

Among my highlights has to be this bagged Lotus Esprit from 811 Design. The Giugiaro wedge looks spaceship compared to contemporary automotive designs. Combined with the 1980s racing car-style livery, it’s easily one of the standouts at Bodentief Speedway. The matching helmet is a really nice finishing touch that completes the car.

Another highlight is this pair of S-Chassis that's parked next to each other - and where do I even start. It’s rare to see such a clean S15 Silvia that’s so extensively modified with BN Sports body kit and Work VS KF wheels - a popular choice for any car aiming for a JDM drifter look. The EU-spec 200SX next to it has also been modified to resemble a JDM Kouki 180SX and has an aggressive stance with wide overfenders.

The event really comes alive as the day gets darker, as the rows of lights that are spread throughout the venue take over. The transition from day to night creates a completely different atmosphere, and I love how the venue transforms with the change in lighting. However, I had to hold my camera very steady to get these shots.

Bodentief Speedway marks the end of a great summer of automotive events here in Germany. While the year hasn’t ended yet, and there are plenty more events for car enthusiasts to enjoy before the end of the year, the quintessential outdoor events spread throughout Germany and much around Europe come to an end – until we pick up again in 2026, that is.
